From an early age I was groomed to enter the family business. My father was Managing Director of a small specialist industrial and commercial flooring company based in the West Midlands. Many other members of my particular branch of the Chance family have been involved in this profession. After a short spell with another company as an apprentice, I joined the family business. The company specialised in large flooring projects for industrial and commercial clients. Contracts included large floor areas using a variety of materials and systems, including: concrete cast in-stu; granolithic and monolithic floor screeds; epoxy, polymer and polyester resins; and other flooring systems. I worked for the business for 15 years until the death of my father, when I decided on a career change and went back to full-time education.

Recently I have revisited the building industry but not on a commercial basis. I am building a pair of new bungalows at the moment. One for my brother, who has a learning disability, and one for myself. Completion of the build is expected late 2005.
